        • Anatjari Tjampitjinpa - Kuniya Kutjarra (Two Pythons), 1997
          Oct. 20, 2020

Anatjari Tjampitjinpa - Kuniya Kutjarra (Two Pythons), 1997

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Anatjari Tjampitjinpa was born and grew up at Ilyipi in Pintupi country west of Kiwirrkurra and east of Jupiter Well in Western Australia. In 1964 he moved to Papunya with his three wives and their children. Although he was an athletic warrior, Anatjari and his family had been surviving only on seed damper as there was nothing to eat or drink, the waters having dried up and the grasses having died. He created only a few pencil and watercolour drawings for Geoffrey Bardon before moving between Balgo and Docker River and did not join the Papunya artists until the mid 1970s, when he was lured by the collective identity of painters, joining together and influencing each other. His paintings were almost exclusively based on the ceremonies and stories associated with the travels of the Tingari ancestors. Anatjari favoured the most literal imagery, which featured dismembered circles floating above an unorganised plane of dotted colour. Certificate reads "This painting depicts designs associated with the rockhole site of Mingkawarli, west of the Kiwirrkurra Community. In mythological times the Kuniya Kutjarra (Two Pythons) Ancestors camped at this site before continuing their travels far to the west passing through Nyinmi (Juniter Well). The straight bar through the centre of the work represents a Wana (digging stick)."

        • Anatjari Tjampitjinpa - Tingari, 1994
          Oct. 20, 2020

          Anatjari Tjampitjinpa - Tingari, 1994

          Est: $7,000 - $9,000

Anatjari Tjampitjinpa was not a prolific artist. Having begun to paint in earnest in the mid 1970s, he continued when, along with many Pintupi, he returned to his ancestral lands in the 1980’s following a change of federal government policy. He painted for Papunya Tula Artists throughout the 1980s and remained a consistent and dedicated painter into the mid 1990s by which time he had become frail. Because he moved throughout his life between the various Pintupi settlements as far north as Balgo Hills, he was instrumental in spreading information about the new acrylic painting amongst artists in places distant from Papunya, where it all began. The Tingari Cycle is a secret song cycle sacred to initiated men. The Tingari are Dreamtime Beings who travelled across the landscape performing ceremonies to create and shape the country associated with Dreaming sites. The Tingari ancestors gathered at these sites for Maliera (initiation) ceremonies. The sites take the form of, and are located at, significant rockholes, sand hills, sacred mountains and water soakages in the western desert. Tingari may be poetically interpreted as song-line paintings relating to the songs (of the people) and creation stories (of places) in Pintupi mythology.

Bardon, Papunya, A Place Made After the Story: The Beginnings of the Western Desert Painting Movement, The Miegunyah Press, Melbourne, 2004. See also: Caruana, W., Aboriginal Art, World of Art Series, Thames and Hudson, London and New York, 2003; and Perkins, H. and H. Fink (eds.), Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius, Art Gallery of New South Wales in association with Papunya Tula Artists, Sydney, 2000 Cf. 'Ceremonial Gound at Kulkuta', 1981, in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, illustrated in Caruana 2003, p.122, plate 103, and Perkins and Fink, 2000, p.107 A classical early 1980s Pintupi painting which features roundels and joining lines at the exclusion of other desert iconography such as the U-shapes denoting people and animal or human tracks. The early 1980s was a period in which Pintupi artists refined their imagery to include only the basic icons such as concentric circles joined by lines representing ancestral paths of travel. Most, if not all of these paintings of the era refer to the landscape and activities of the ancestral beings known as the Tingari. The paring down of imagery to the point where it becomes minimal in European terms, served to reflect the esoteric and highly sacred/secret nature of the creative events for which the Tingari are responsible. The paintings became highly conceptualised and formal maps of the landscape which the Tingari had created. This style adopted by the Pintupi was the precursor of the paintings of the 1990s and later which tend to dispense with the traditional desert iconography altogether, including the roundels, and instead feature repeated lines constructed of dots or repeated shapes as seen in the work of George and Willy Tjungurrayi among several others Anatjari's 'Ceremonial ground at Kulkuta', 1981, is considered to be the seminal work in the transition in Pintupi imagery in the early 1980s. 'Tingari ceremonies at Kiwirrkura', 1985, depicts ceremonies at this site in Western Australia, to the west of the Pintupi community of Kintore. The roundels in the painting represent a large group of men who travelled through this site heading east to Papunya itself. A settlement was established at Kiwirrkura by the Pintupi in 1983 This painting is sold with an accompanying Papunya Tula Artists certificate

Beside each of these is a ritual board carried by the senior men: that of the Tjampitjinpa skin group is at the top, that of the Tjapaltjarri at the bottom. The vertical black lines represent spears. The sections of red and of white dots indicate the plentiful supply of a variety of bush foods which means that the rains had fallen some time before This painting is sold with an accompanying annotated diagram describing the story depicted together with some notes written by Pat Hogan that suggest a relationship between the painting and some contemporary events that are unlikely to be factual. The notes read; 'Anatjara No. 3 has just come out of gaol after spearing incident at Papunya. During fights Timmy Jabanardi had spear wounds in lung and Tommy No. 4 lost his reproductive organs. Painting painted prior to conflict shows the premeditation of above incident'
