BIOGRAPHY: Gaylord Sangston Truesdell was born on January 1, 1850 in Waukegan, Illinois and died June 13, 1899, in New York City. Unmarried, he was a celebrated painter and artist who began as an engraver. He studied in the Pennsylvania Academy and, in 1885, went to France where he worked under Ernest Meissonier and Fernand Cormon.In 1889, his painting "There's The Shepherd" received a bronze medal in the Salon. In 1892, "Vaches au Borde de la Riviere" received the first gold medal awarded by the Salon to an American painter.

Truesdell, Montigny, 1885 Catalogue note: Born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1850, Gaylord Sangston Truesdell began his career as an engraver. The artist studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and then, in 1885, relocated to France. In Paris, Truesdell studied under Ernest Meissonier, Fernand Cormon and Pierre Edouard Frère. He was drawn to the small towns and villages around Paris He exhibited at several Salons in Paris between 1886 and 1895, receiving a second class medal in 1892, and a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1899

The subject is a woman picking fruit from a tree on a farm wearing wooden clogs. Muted colors with bright blue sky. Painting is known as "Picking Pears." Frame measures approx 35.5" x 45.5", exposed area approx 27.75" x 37.75". Painting on canvas laid down on board. Gaylord Truesdell is a listed artist who studied in the Pennsylvania Academy and after 1885 spent time painting in France where two of his paintings received medals by the (French) Salon.

In 1889, his painting "There's The Shepherd" received a bronze medal in the Salon. In 1892, "Vaches au Borde de la Riviere" received the first gold medal awarded by the Salon to an American painter. Another painting, "Shepherd and His Flock" (1898) is at the University at Shawnee, Oklahoma (Source: Peggy King Truesdell). This is a pastoral landscape featuring reclining cows. Signed by Truesdell on lower left. Nice moulded frame. There is a small tear in the sky area and 1 or 2 small holes thru the painting. Measures: 19" Tall X 27" Wide Condition: Very Good
