      • Exceptional Madonna on Panel, Adam Van Noort (Antwerp c. 1561-Antwerp, 1641) Flemish school, 16th century
        Nov. 14, 2024

Exceptional Madonna on Panel, Adam Van Noort (Antwerp c. 1561-Antwerp, 1641) Flemish school, 16th century

        Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Exceptional and masterful oil on panel, possibly the most important and best preserved Madonna and Child of the five known compositions by this author. Dimensions only panel without frame 60 x 39 cm. This masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, executed in oil on panel, represents the Virgin Mary in an intimate scene with the Child Jesus, characterized by its profound religious symbolism and exceptional technical handling. The Virgin, dressed in a rich red tunic and wrapped in a dark blue cloak, holds the Child with maternal delicacy while he gently caresses her. The architectural background, with its arches and classical structures, suggests a direct influence of Renaissance architecture, probably inspired by the great masters of the time. The choice of oil on panel as a support shows a meticulous technique, allowing a vibrant play of light and shadow, and a detailed representation of textures, from the soft fabrics to the infant's skin.

DIE VERURTEILUNG EINES GLÄUBIGEN CHRISTEN Öl auf Kupfer. 84 x 103 cm. Jan. 28, 2023

Adam van Noort (1557 in Antwerp - 1641) , Wedding in Cana

        Est: €10,000 - €12,000

Adam van Noort lived in his native Antwerp and mainly painted portraits and historical scenes. Apparently, only a small part of his work has survived. Thanks to the engravers, and above all the graphics by R. Sadeler, some of the pictures are still known. Adam van Noort's great pedagogical and sensitive talent is evidenced mainly as a teacher to his many students. Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonius van Dyck, and Sebastian Vrancx, Hendrick van Balen the Elder. Ä. and Jacob Jordaens (whose daughter, Elisabeth Noort, he married and had three children), were probably his most important students with whom he had a long relationship. It is all the more significant that the present painting The Wedding at Canaa, by Adam van Noort, is a new discovery and enriches his narrow work. Image structure, composition and color tone, as well as the arrangement of the many figures in their different characters, and accumulations of metal vessels (which he often worked out precisely), are typical of his style and Flemish painting of the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

HOCHZEIT ZU KANAA Öl auf Holz. 89,5 x 150 cm. In ebonisiertem Holzrahmen.

111 x 166 French Translation *ADAM VAN NOORT (1562-1641) (entourage) Le Christ bénissant les enfants (Matt. 19:13-15; Marc 10:13-16; Luc 18:15-17).

In a letter, dated 23 November 2005, Nico van Hout, curator of the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, confirms the attribution to Adam van Noort. He considers the present portrait an interesting adittion to the oeuvre of the artist, as we know Adam van Noort mainly as a painter of history scenes. It may serve as a basis for reconstructing Van Noort's portrait oeuvre. 103.7 x 75.3
