        (4) SEWALL FAMILY SILHOUETTES Group of (4) Framed Early 19th c. American Paper Silhouettes, one by Boston portrait painter and silhouettist Henry Williams (MA, 1787-1830), including young and older (age 47) depictions of physician, writer and professor Dr. Thomas Sewall (1786-1845) and young and older images of his brother-in-law Dr. Reuben Dimond Mussey (1780-1866), the older image of Dr. Mussey includes the impressed name 'Williams' (for Henry Williams), the younger Dr. Mussey image has an illegible impressed mark, all in newer lemon gold wooden frames, OS: 5 1/2" x 4 5/8" to 6 3/8" x 4 5/8". Foxing and toning, gilding losses to frames. Dr. Thomas Sewell was born in Augusta, ME, graduated from Harvard Medical School, practiced medicine in Chebacco, MA, and was a member of the first Faculty of the Columbian College in Washington DC; New Hampshire born Dr. Reuben Massey was a professor at Dartmouth's medical school and Middlebury College and an advocate of the Temperance movement. He was married to Dr. Sewell's sister, Mary (1782-1807).

        Watercolor on ivory, 3 1/8 x 2 3/8 inches. Signed and dated "HW 1813" l.l. The reverse with note inscribed in part "Died 10th Sept. 1812 aged 22 years- Sep 10 '62, 1/2 past 3 pm. It is now at this hour, fifty years since she died..." In an oval leather case with satin lining, pinned to which is a gold wedding band. The gentleman's portrait circa 1830, also watercolor on ivory, 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches.Provenance: Descended in the family of Charles Chauncy Foster.
