ROUX, Frederic (1805-1870). Vancluse Captain Raymond L. Gillchrist / Entering Port of Havre, May 10th 1832. Watercolor, pen and ink on paper. Signed and Dated. Havre, June 1832. 27 1/2" x 33 3/4" framed. Frederic Roux was from the Roux family of Marsailles, a family of marine painters and hydrographers. He was the third child of Antoine and Rose Roux and as a child showed great skills as a painter and studied under Jospeh Vernet. Frederic Roux was the talented of his family and was a popular painter for American ship captains. Admiral Jean-Baptiste Philibert Willaumuz commissioned 40 watercolors of his vessel's to be painted by Roux which are now hung at the Musee de la Marine in Paris. This beautiful maritime watercolor shows the Vaucluse entering the port of Havre under Captain Raymond Leeman Gilchrist of Liverpool. The ship is flying under the American and French flag. The lighthouse of the port of Havre is clearly visible. There are other sailing vessels in the background.

Lady Margaret Stanley (1801-1858), daughter of the 12th Earl of Derby, married Thomas Grovesnor Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton in 1821, becoming the Countess Wilton referred to here. An avid sailor, Lord Wilton was a founding member of the Royal Mersey Yacht Club in 1844 and later served as Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron from 1849 until 1881.

The American packet Republic , hailing from Baltimore, gets underway on her homeward voyage, depicted off the French port of Le Havre, with Fort Saint Jean astern. The Roux family of Mediterranean port painters was made up of no less than six important marine artists who were all born in the French port city of Marseille. Francois Joseph Frederic Roux, known as Frederic, was the second son of Antoine Roux (1765-1835) and was the third generation of this important dynasty of sea painters. In the winter of 1851, the same year he designed the schooner yacht America, George Steers also designed the centerboard sloop Mayflower. Her stem post was narrower, with an extreme beam and a shallow draft. Sold by William H. Brown to the Schuyler Brothers, they sold her to Louis Augustus Depau in 1853 and renamed her Sylvie after his wife (daughter of the French Admiral de Grasse). Louis was the son of Francis Depau, founder of the first line of sailing packets between New York and Havre, France, and a prominent maritime family. Sailing from Depau Island on June 11, 1853 and arriving at Havre in 16 days and 12 hours, Sylvie, with her Captain, Peter H. Comstock of New York was credited for her exceptionally swift passage. On August 19th 1853 Sylvie raced at the Royal Yacht Squadron against Arrow, Aurora, Alarm, Osprey, Aurora Borealis, and Julia. Sylvie finished second behind Julia and was awarded a special 50-guinea cup. Known as the 'Sylvie' cup, this trophy has been raced for every year since 1898 on the Great Lakes. In 1857 she was purchased by C.A. Stebbins of the New York Yacht Club who refitted her as a schooner. It was in this configuration that she competed in the first America's Cup defense in 1870 as part of the 'Defender' fleet which consisted of 18 yachts including the challenger Cambria and the first winner of the 100 guinea cup, America. The selected defender Magic easily won over Cambria by 39 mins - 17secs. Sylvie finished 7th across the line and 3rd on corrected time. Cambria, the challenger, finished 8th across the line and 10th on corrected time. She continued to sail until the turn of the century. Sylvie was broken up in 1906.

FREDERIC ROUX (FRENCH 1805-1874). "RUBICON, TAKING A PILOT OFF CAPE LA HEVE, FEBY 23, 1837." Built at Medford in 1835, 490 tons, the "Rubicon" was put into service in the New Orleans-Havre cotton trade. Watercolor on paper, 17 1/4 x 23 1/2inches. Signed and dated "Frederic Roux, au Havre 1837" l.r. The reverse inscribed and signed "Frederic Roux/ hydrographe & peintre de Marine/ petit quay Notre Dame N.13/ au Havre/ en Mar 5/ 1837." In a gilt period frame. Literature: Frederic Roux painted a second portrait of the Rubicon in stormy seas, illustrated in Gaubert and Johnson, "Ships and Shipping: A Collection of Pictures... Painted by Antoine Roux and His Sons," 1925, p. 181.
