      • Franz Schubert & Franz Grillparzer bei der Arbeit
        Aug. 26, 2023

Franz Schubert & Franz Grillparzer bei der Arbeit

        Est: -

Franz Schubert liegt hier. ...", lasierende bzw. gering pastose biedermeierliche Bildnismalerei, Öl auf Leinwand, 1. Hälfte 19. Jh., unsigniert, Craquelure, partiell Malschichtverluste, hinterlegte Fehlstellen in der Leinwand, restaurierungsbedürftig, schön in originaler, schlichter Furnierleiste gerahmt, Falzmaße ca. 85 x 104,5 cm. Franz Schubert & Franz Grillparzer at Work Beingermeier double portrait of two young men at a table in the interior, seated on the left with a book under his propped-up arm, next to snuff box and upturned coffee cup, is the Austrian writer and dramatist Franz Seraphicus Grillparzer (1791 Vienna to 1872 Vienna), whose portrait goes back to a portrait of Grillparzer by Moritz Daffinger made in 1827, on the right in profile with writing utensils and sheet of music the Austrian composer Franz Peter Schubert (1797 Himmelpfortgrund/Vienna to 1828 Wieden) is depicted, next to Schubert's sheet of music four coloured tokens are shown, According to tradition, the composer's income was precarious and it is said that the artist paid for a bill with a song written on the spot in a tavern, In this scene, Grillparzer and Schubert seem to have had a lively intellectual exchange: Schubert set lines by Franz Grillparzer to music in his "Ständchen" Opus 135, and Franz Grillparzer dedicated touching lines to Schubert, who died at an early age, for his funeral monument: "Tonkunst buried a rich possession here, But even more beautiful hopes. Franz Schubert lies here. ...", glazed or slightly impasto Biedermeier portrait painting, oil on canvas, 1st half 19th century, unsigned, craquelure, partial paint layer losses, backed defects in the canvas, in need of restoration, beautifully framed in original, simple veneer strip, folding dimensions approx. 85 x 104.5 cm.

CATALOGUE NOTE Autograph letters by Schubert are rare; only about sixty are known, of which this is one of the earliest. This letter has not not been offered on the market for many decades. On 12 March 1818, Schubert and Anselm Hüttenbrenner played music with the sisters Therese and Babette Kunz (for piano eight hands) at a private concert at the inn "Zum römischen Kaiser" in Vienna. Hüttenbrenner (1794-1868) was a member of Schubert's closest circle of friends, a composer and a pupil of Salieri. He is best known for keeping hold of the manuscript of Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony, which had in fact been sent to his brother Josef Hüttenbrenner. The letter, which is stamped by the Sächsische Landesbibliothek, Dresden, was recently de-accessioned and released to the heirs of the late Paul Hinrichsen, one of seven children of the Leipzig music publisher Henri Hinrichsen.

NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSION CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE. CATALOGUE NOTE Schubert's autograph manuscript of the parts is the primary source for the publication of this early quartet by the Neue Schubert Ausgabe. It represents the composer's final version, incorporating his decision to place the 'Menuetto' and 'Trio' after the slow movement ('Andante con moto'). (In the autograph score, written between 3 and 7 March 1813, the Menuetto came second). However, the manuscript shows signs that Schubert was still working on this early String Quartet. In writing out the viola part, Schubert appears to have forgotten the new order of the movements, and adds the 'Menuetto' and 'Trio' at the end of the manuscript. In fact the final three pages of the viola part are written rather hurredly with a much lighter and more fluent script than elsewhere (with corrections to notes made "on the fly"), rather more like his sketches than his final fair copies. There are a few markings not found in the first edition of the parts (1890), including "staccato" in the 'Menuetto'. The Quartet was among the works offered by the composer's brother Ferdinand Schubert to the publisher Diabelli in 1829 (Deutsch, Schubert. A Documentary Biography, 1946, p.902), and again in his notice on Franz Schubert in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, Leipzig, on 23 April - 3 May 1839 (Deutsch, p.915). .

NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSION CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE. CATALOGUE NOTE This is the autograph manuscript of one of Schubert's best-known violin works. It has been a staple of the violinist's repertoire ever since it was first published by Diabelli in 1836 as a "sonatina". It is notable for its graceful and unassuming character and idiomatic writing for the instrument. There is no other autograph manuscript of this work, except for the fragments discussed below. Schubert's revisions and alterations to his composing score are extensive, particularly to the piano accompaniment. Consequently he struck through the first movement in pencil and wrote his revised music for the piano part in the separate manuscript found here. The autograph composing score contains many readings that differ from Diabelli's posthumous edition, particularly in the violin part in third movement, which is in places entirely different. Schubert wrote a later manuscript of the piece, possibly for the publisher, but all that remain are the final six bars in a manuscript in the Newberry Library in Chicago. The present composing manuscript is incomplete at the end: the remaining part of the last movement (bars 74-245) is held by the Universitätsbibliothek, Lund (Otto Taussig collection). The separate autograph piano part is illustrated on page 111.
