Bartolomeus van Bassen, around 1590 Antwerp – 1652 The Hague THE SLAGGLATION OF CHRIST

      Est: €4,000 - €6,000

In the center of a large, palatial interior is the seated Jesus, bare-chested. His wrists are tied and with a sad look and his head slightly bowed, he looks at a man crouching in front of him who hands him a mocking scepter. Behind him are various henchmen and a soldier in shining armor who is about to place the crown of thorns on his head. Particularly striking on the right is a standing henchman wearing a fur robe. On the right side of the background the view falls into a light-flooded corridor. In the background on the left, a group of armed men are approaching, while Pontius Pilate is probably looking down on the flagellation on a balcony to the left above the men. According to Ertz, the magnificently dressed figures on the left edge of the picture with their outstretched legs and the floor tapering like a chessboard towards the background create a three-dimensionality and depth. Both the lighting of the composition and the arrangement of the columns and views testify to Bartolomeus van Bassen's excellent perspective skills. Bartolomeus van Bassen was a Dutch architect and painter of the Baroque period and an important representative of the Dutch Golden Age. He gained particular fame as the city architect of The Hague and builder of the palace of Frederick V of the Palatinate in Rhenen. He was already a successful painter during his lifetime, devoting himself primarily to architectural perspectives and interior views of churches. Oil on copper plate. 70 x 88cm

Bartholomew van Bassen (1590-1652), Mocking of Christ

      Est: €5,000 - €7,000

After being condemned by Pontius Pilate, Jesus was mocked by the Roman soldiers in the Praetorium as the King of the Jews (Mark 15:16-20; Matthew 27:27-31). They clothed him with a purple robe, put a crown of thorns on him, and gave him a reed as a scepter. Then they knelt before him. This scene is located in the middle of the open hall of the palace. Pilate watches the mockery from the balcony above the portal to the left. Next to him is the high priest, pointing down at Jesus. Soldiers and other people from the court also watch the mockery with amusement. Two soldiers sit on a bench in the front left while more spectators stand in the background. On the right is a view through the courtyard gate with a portcullis into the palace courtyard. The central mocking group is inspired by an engraving after a painting by Anthony van Dyck. Conspicuous on the right is the officer with the fur, which is designed almost archaeologically, according to ancient reliefs.

      Bartholomeus van Bassen (1590-1652)

      Est: €25,000 - €35,000

Bartholomeus van Bassen (1590-1652), A Renaissance church interior, remnants of a signature (lower left on the pedestal), oil on panel, 83x124 cm, Provenance: -Collection K. Twining, Esq. Blackheath, May 1847 (according to a label on the reverse). -With Galerie Rapps, Stockholm. -Auction, Sotheby's, London, 17 December 1998, lot 3. -Private collection, Amsterdam. Little is known about the Golden-Age painter Bartholomeus van Bassen (1590–1652). In 1613, his name is registered in the archives of the Sint-Lucasgilde (‘St. Lucas Guild’) of the city Delft in the Netherlands. There is however reason to believe that Van Bassen is of Flemish origin, because his style can be linked to certain interior painters from Antwerp such as Pieter Neefs I (1578/90–1656/61) and Hendrik van Steenwijck II (1580–1640). In 1622, he moved to The Hague, where he played a more prominent role in the local painters’ guild. Not just a painter, Van Bassen was also active as an architect; this was a combination that was not uncommon in the seventeenth century. His professional view on architecture certainly helped him to depict church and palace interiors very realistically. Often his creations were not directly linked to existing buildings, but rather based on architectural concepts with which he made his own splendid interiors. The figures in his paintings were most likely painted by artist friends. The focus of his interiors was the correct mathematical use of perspective. The depicted figures appear to be the work of another yet unidentified artist.

BASSEN, BARTHOLOMÄUS VAN 1590 Antwerp - 1652 The Hague - attributed Church Interior. Oil on wood. 64,5 x 84cm. Remains of the signature with dating on the lower left: (...) fecit 1628. Framed. Assessment: Dr. Walther Bernt, Munich 1973, with attribution to Bartholomäus van Bassen. Provenance: Private collection, Rheineland, acquired at the Munich art trade 1973/74. For the impressive and well preserved panel a correspondece dated 2004 between the owner and Axel Rüger, at that time curator for Dutch paintings at the National Gallery London, is present. In this correspondance the preparations of a not yet published catalogue raisonné about Bartholomäus van Bassen are mentioned. In this correspondance Axel Rüger confirms that he has no doubts about the authorship of van Bassen and mentions several works from 1628 showing a comparable composition and colouring. Ellis Dluraat from the RKD in The Hague to whom we presented photographs of the painting was not able to attribute it clearly and sees it in the circle of Bartholomäus van Bassen and/or Dirck van Delen (1605-1671).

Blankert, in a letter dated The Hague, October 23, 1985, attributed the present painting to Bartholomeus van Bassen with staffage by Jacob Pynas. He noted that both of these artists lived for some time in Delft and in the Hague, and further noted the inspiration of the artist Pieter Lastman in the figures of the two attendants in the left foreground.

Anthonie de Lorme (Tournai c.1610-1673 Rotterdam)

      Est: $100,000 - $150,000

The interior of a Protestant church at night with elegant figures in the foreground signed, inscribed, and dated 'HIER.LEYT./BEGRAVEN./NIEMANT./A. DE./LORME./1645.' (center right, on the wall) oil on panel 461/2 x 591/2 in. (118.1 x 151.1 cm.) NOTES De Lorme's date of birth is unknown and he is first recorded in Rotterdam in 1627, when he acted as a witness for his teacher, Jan van Vucht. He married in Rotterdam in 1647 and died there in 1673. His earliest known picture dates from 1639 and shows a church interior that is derived from, although not identical with, the St. Laurenskerk in Rotterdam. Throughout the 1640's he painted only imaginary church interiors such as the present painting, and in these he was influenced by the work of his teacher, van Vucht, as well as by Bartholomeus van Bassen. Around 1652 de Lorme painted his first real view of the interior of the St. Laurenskerk and thereafter almost all his oeuvre consists of paintings of that church (see, for example, the painting sold at Christie's, London, 16 April 1999, lot 42 for œ270,000 = $430,000. While he was influenced by the Delft painters of church interiors such as Gerard Houckgeest and Hendrick van Vliet, the influence of Pieter Saenredam was of paramount importance to him throughout his lifetime. De Lorme made something of a specialty of painting capriccios of classical churches at night, other examples of which are at the Mus‚e des Beaux-Arts, Rennes (see W. Liedtke, Architectural Painting in Delft, Groningen, 1982, pp.126-27, plate 110); sold, Sotheby's, London, 3 July 1997, lot 90 (œ95,000 = $160,000); sold, Christie's, London, 9 December 1988, lot 104; and in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (H. Potterton, Dutch Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Paintings in the National Gallery of Ireland. A complete catalogue, Dublin, 1986, p.85, no.516). In all of these paintings the staffage appears to be the work of Anthonie Palamedes (1601 - 1673), who is recorded by A. von Wurzbach, Niederl„ndisches Knstler-Lexikon, 1963, II, p.67, as having collaborated with de Lorme in the 1640s. SALESROOM NOTICE Please note two of the panels are stamped with an unknown Rotterdam panelmaker's mark.

DANIEL FEEDING THE BABYLONIAN DRAGON oil on panel 9 3/4 x 13 1/4 in. (24.3 x 33.7 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Sotheby's, New York, Nov. 25, 1981, lot 9, as Frans Francken the Younger and Bartholomeus van Bassen LITERATURE U. Harting, Frans Francken II, 1989, p. 303, no. 256 Dr. Harting, loc. cit., included the present painting in her catalogue raisonne having only known it from a photograph. For this reason she expressed some reservation as to the attribution on stylistic grounds and because of the uniqueness of the subject matter to Francken and his atelier. Having now seen a transparency of the painting she fully endorses the attribution to Francken in a letter dated November 13, 1991. She will again publish the work in her forthcoming article for the Revue du Louvre, Daniel, Bel et le dragon de Babylon - - Un cabinet a peintures par Frans Francken II. (1581-1642) au musee Calvet d'Avignon. In this article Dr. Harting discusses a painted cabinet in the Musee Calvet, Avignon, where the story of Daniel decorates the drawers and doors. The subject of "Daniel feeding the Babylonian dragon" appears on the right wing of the cabinet. In the present painting Francken repeated and developed the composition of the Avignon painting, although in reverse. He also extended the composition in order to enlarge the door of the palace seen beyond. Dr. Harting believes that the present painting was executed somewhat later than the Avignon version. The subject, which was rarely represented by artists in Flanders in the 17th century, is taken from the Apocryphal Book of Daniel. The architecture is by another hand reminiscent of Bartholomeus van Bassen (1590-1652).
