        CHARLES-AMÉDÉE-PHILIPPE VAN LOO, 1719 – 1795

        Est: €15,000 - €25,000

GALANTE BADESZENE Öl auf Holz. 37 x 50 cm. Galerie Sakura, Paris. (1410992) (11) Charles–Amédée–Philippe van Loo, 1719 – 1795 GALLANT BATHING SCENE Oil on panel. Signed and dated “1736“ lower left. Label by Christie’s on the reverse. Provenance: Edmond de Rothschild collection. Galerie Sakura, Paris.

(Rivoli 1719–1795 Paris) Fête Champêtre, oil on canvas, 91 x 121 cm, framed We are grateful to Helmut Börsch-Supan for endorsing the attribution of the present painting to Charles Amédée Philippe van Loo on the basis of a digital photograph and for his help in cataloguing this lot (written communication). Börsch-Supan compares the present composition to a pair of paintings slightly smaller in size (68 x 106 cm) depicting the embarcation for Cythera and a Fête Champêtre. They had been painted by van Loo in 1750 in his function as court painter to Frederick II of Prussia for the ‘Konfidenztafelzimmer’ (the private dining room, destroyed in 1945) at the Potsdam City Palace. Due to relocation during the war, when the pictures were kept at Charlottenburg Palace, they are now again at Potsdam (Foundation Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg). The picture featuring the dancing party compares particularly well even in the landscape details, with the trees showing the same structure of branches and foliage. As to the treatment of the garments, fragmented and highly dynamic draperies are typical for van Loo’s painting style. This lends his compositions a somewhat laboured and augmented vivacity – a characteristic trait also visible in his portraits. The individual motifs were borrowed from Antoine Watteau and, even more distinctly, from his follower Nicolas Lancret, both were held in high esteem by Frederick II. Van Loo was a member of a French family of artists, originally from the Netherlands. He was born in Rivoli near Turin in 1719 as a son of the painter Jean-Baptiste van Loo, who became his first teacher. He trained in Paris and from 1738 travelled to Rome, Naples, Florence and Aix-en-Provence, returning to Paris in 1745. In 1748, he was called to the court of Frederick II of Prussia, where he pursued a versatile career also working as a ceiling painter and tapestry designer. Granted leave by the King, he returned to Paris, during the Seven Years war (1756–1763) and then mainly worked as a portraitist in Berlin again between 1763 and 1769.

Charles-Amédée-Philippe van Loo was born into one of the most important French artist families of the 18th century. His father, mother and two brothers were also painters, as was his uncle Carle, who was doubtlessly the most famous member of the family. Amédée van Loo painted a 220 x 250 cm large composition entitled "Halt de Chasse" for the hunting themed dining room of Louis XV, which is today kept in the Louvre. The present work is a section of the work, highlighting the main group on the left. In 1748, Amédée became court painter to Frederick the Great in Berlin. He remained there until 1758, when the Prussian king allowed him to return to his home town of Paris during the Seven Years' War, in which France and Prussia were enemies. Amédée returned to Berlin in 1763, and there painted the ceiling fresco “The Induction of Ganymede in Olympus” for the marble hall of the Neues Palais in Potsdam in 1768.

Charles Amedée van Loo, A Portrait of the Philosopher Claude Adrien Helvétius CertificateDr. Ludwig Meyer, Munich 20.3.2007King Frederick II enjoyed close personal or written contact with some of the most significant intellectuals of his time: Diderot, Montesquieu, d´Alembert, Voltaire as well as Enlightenment philosophers such as Claude Adrien Helvétius (the latinised version of "Swiss", 1715 Paris - 1771 Versailles). The French painter Charles Amedée van Loo, who resided in Berlin from 1748 to 1758, was among the numerous artists at his court. The painter returned to Berlin in 1763 following the Seven Years' War in which Prussia and France were enemies, and he remained in royal service until 1769. Van Loo even received a yearly pension from the King after returning to Paris. This unsigned pastel drawing can be attributed to van Loo via an engraving by A. de Saint Aubin in which both the artist and the patron - Frederick II - are mentioned (Nancy Mitford: Frederick the Great, 1973, p. 250). Helvétius travelled to Prussia at the French King's behest in 1764 and was received with high honours. Van Loo was also in Berlin at this time, and thus we can assume that this charming portrait was made in this year. 61 x 50 cm
