Cornelis van Spaendonck was born in Tilburg in Holland, studied in Antwerp in Flanders, but it was in Paris that he became a successful painter of flower sill lifes. He exhibited in the salon already during the Ancien Regime, became member of the Royal Academie and was director of the porcelain manufacture in Sèvres. He carried forward the Netherlandish tradition of flower still life painting and was until the 19th century a celebrated artist. This fruit still life depicting grapes and peaches stems from his late period.

A FLOWER STILL LIFE WITH ROSES, TULIPS, PEONIES AND OTHER FLOWERS IN A VASE 84 by 67 cm. signed and dated 1817 l.l. oil on canvas NOTE Cornelis van Speandock was one of the most accomplished flower painters of his time. After serving his apprenticeship at Herreyns' studio in Antwerp, Van Spaendonck visited Paris in 1773. His elder brother Gerard, also active as a flower painter, had already settled there and enjoyed considerable success, judging from the many commissions he received as well was his appointment to King's miniature painter. Cornelis followed in the wake of his brother's success. In 1789 he became member of the Académie des Beaux Arts, which allowed him to participate in the salons that were held in the Louvre. In 1795 he became artistic director of the porcelain factory in Sèvres, a position he held for five years. Gerard and Cornelis worked closely together. Through their contacts with the French upper class, Gerard and Cornelis received many commissions. 'Initially his work resembled that of Gerard, but after some time he developed a style of his own', Sam Segal writes in his book Gerard & Cornelis van Spaendonck. Twee Brabantse bloemenschilders in Parijs (Maarsen 1980, p. 45). 'Although he was heavily influenced by his brother', Segal continues, 'Cornelis clearly had a talent of his own and was sometimes more playful and perhaps even more artistic than his brother'.

(7.7 cm.) diam. a pair (2) NOTES After a brief apprenticeship with Guillaume-Jacques Herreyns, the artist left Antwerp for Paris to join his brother Gerard, who was also an artist. Next he worked at the SŠvres porcelain factory as both director and designer. In 1789 he became a member of the Acad‚mie and made his Salon debut in the same year establishing himself in his own right. He painted and exhibited throughout his life with contributions to the Salon continuing until 1833. Cornelis was able to execute large canvases as well as these smaller detailed compositions which relate more closely to his work at SŠvres. Similar compositions can be found in the Louvre, Paris, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, where the dimensions are within one cm. of the present pair (see M. Boven and S. Segal, Gerard & Cornelis van Spaendonck Twee Brabantse bloemenschilders in Parijs, Amsterdam, 1980, pp. 144-15, figs. 68-70).
