        Apr. 22, 2023

Watteau Pastel of an Elegant Party

        Est: $3,000 - $6,000

WATTEAU, Francois-Louis-Joseph (1758-1823). Un parti elegant autour d'une table, en regardent une dame faisant dire sa fortune avec les cartes [An elegant party around a table, watching a lady having her fortune told with cards]. Red and black chalk and pastel on paper. c. 1800. 15 1/8" x 19 1/2" visible, 25 1/2" x 29 1/2" framed. This exquisite drawing of a card party is a superb example of Francois-Louis-Joseph Watteau's style, which echoes the sumptuous excess beloved by wealthy Parisiennes of the late eighteenth century. Watteau, who was well-known in his day for his elegant fashion plates of the finery worn by upper-class Europeans, employed his eye for lush detail to create this scene. The gathering of the material on the jewel-tone dresses, the richness of the lace trimmings, and the feathers on the hats of the women all speak to an incredible attention to detail rarely captured in the pastel medium. Watteau was born at Valenciennes in 1758 to the artist Louis-Joseph Watteau. He began studying under his father and the artist Louis-Jacques Durameau at a young age, before moving to Paris to attend Ecole des Beaux Arts. Watteau eventually settled in Lille in 1785, and began assisting his father at the Academy. In 1812 he became director of the Academy, and founded the museum in Lille. Like his father, Francois-Louis-Joseph Watteau was known as "Watteau de Lille" during his lifetime and in reference to his work.

FRANÇOIS BOUCHER (after Watteau) Paysage avec une passerelle

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

FRANÇOIS BOUCHER (after Watteau) Paysage avec une passerelle. Etching, 1726-28. 243x324 mm; 9 5/8x12 3/4 inches, narrow to small margins. From L'Oeuvre d'Antoine Watteau . . . Figures et Differents Caractères. A very good impression of this scarce etching. According to Carlson, "One of the most lavish tributes paid to Watteau's (1684-1721) memory was the publication of Jean de Jullienne's L'Oeuvre d'Antoine Watteau, which was printed in Paris in four volumes between 1726 and 1735 . . . Because some etchings are unsigned, the precise extent of Boucher's collaboration is variously estimated at between 106 and 119 plates, all published between 1726 and 1728 in the two volumes of the recueil given over to prints after Watteau's drawings, which are subtitled Figures et Differents Caractères, (Carlson/Ittmann, Regency to Empire, French Printmaking 1715-1814, Minneapolis, 1984, page 74). This was Boucher's (1703-1770) first significant commission as a young artist and a fitting tribute to his mentor. Baudicour 135.

Having stoutly defended Quebec against several onslaughts from the British, Montcalm-Gozon opted for open battle on the Plains of Abraham. This proved disastrous, culminating in his own mortal wounding while in retreat. As the legend on this plate describes, he was buried at his request in a bomb crater, not knowing that General Wolfe, commanding the British troops, had already died in the same engagement.Estimate: $500—700

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

Francois Louis Joseph Watteau (Watteau de Lille) French, 1758-1823 Une Fete Champetre Oil on canvas 37 x 48 inches (94 x 122 cm) Provenance: Said to have been in the collection of Frederick the Great of Prussia and presented by him to his Ambassador Count von Rothenburg Collection of Thomas Crosse, Esq. of Norwich, England Christie''s, London, 1871 Collection of the Royal Danish Art Galleries, London, 1877 Collection of Colonel Claude Lowther, M.P., London Clarke''s Art Gallery, March 17, 1923 Collection of Captain and Mrs. George H. Cobham, New York Collection of Arthur Humphrey; by descent in the family to the present owner Francois-Louis-Joseph Watteau (1759-1823), and his father, Louis-Joseph Watteau (1731-1798) were both known as "Watteau de Lille"- since they lived and worked in Lille, in northern France - to distinguish them from their uncle and great-uncle, the painter Antoine Watteau, who worked in Paris. Antoine, considered one of the greatest European artists of the eighteenth century, was the originator of the composition type known as the f^te champ^tre or f^te galante, a representation of an elegant outdoor entertainment. The f^te champ^tre enjoyed wide popularity with collectors throughout the century, and was a favorite subject for a number of distinguished artists. During his youth in the 1780s, Franzois Watteau enjoyed early success working in his great-uncle''s tradition. After the Revolution of 1789 and especially after the rise of Napoleon, he turned to other, less aristocratic, subjects, including battle scenes. His best-known work is the monumental Battle of the Pyramids, now in the Mus''es des Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes. This rare F^te Champ^tre was certainly painted during the 1780s, and is said to have belonged to Frederick the Great of Prussia, a great lover of works of this type.
