    DIE FEUERPROBE DES GAIUS MUCIUS SCAEVOLA VOR DEM ETRUSKERKÖNIG PORSENNA Tuschzeichnung auf bräunlichem Papier, weiß gehöht und laviert. 17 x 23,5 cm. In der linken unteren Ecke in Tusche signiert. Die Darstellung zeigt die bekannte Szene aus der römischen Frühgeschichte, wonach Scaevola die Stadt Rom gerettet habe, als sie im Jahr 508 v. Chr. von Porsenna belagert wurde. Der Versuch Scaevolas, sich ins feindliche Lager zu schleichen um den Belagerer zu töten, misslang, danach hielt er vor den Augen Porsennas seine rechte Hand in eine offene Flamme, ohne sich von den Schmerzen beeindrucken zu lassen. Der Belagerer war von diesem Beispiel an Mut und Entschlossenheit derart überwältigt, dass er die Belagerung Roms abbrach. Das Thema wurde von römischen Historikern wie Livius überliefert und von zahlreichen Künstlern der Neuzeit thematisch aufgegriffen. In ganz ähnlicher Weise wie im vorliegenden Blatt haben Peter Paul Rubens und Anton van Dyck diese Szene dargestellt (Budapest Museum für Bildende Künste). Im Vordergrund steht Scaevola, der seine Hand in die Flamme hält, während Porsenna auf einem römischen Stuhl sitzt, in Begleitung zweier weiterer Soldaten im Inneren eines Feldzeltes. Die Szenerie in eine querovale Abgrenzungslinie eingepasst. Die Zeichnung ist von hoher Qualität. (8607110)
