      • Peter van Boucle (ca. 161–1673), Still Life with Basket and Fruit
        Nov. 20, 2023

Peter van Boucle (ca. 161–1673), Still Life with Basket and Fruit

        Est: €6,000 - €12,000

A basket shown close-up contains various fruits, apples, peaches, pumpkins and blue and green grapes. A branch with peaches and stalks of cut grapes stands out decoratively on a dark background. The painting style is very delicate and painterly, the fruits stand out three-dimensionally and look very natural and alive. According to his own statement, Peter van Boucle was a student of Frans Snijders. His painting is clearly influenced by him. The fruit basket still life type was invented by Caravaggio with his famous painting of 1595/1596. Frans Snijders saw it in 1608–1609 during his stay with Cardinal Federico Borromeo in the collection of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, and then also painted a still life with fruit baskets in Antwerp. Unlike Caravaggio's paintings, however, Flemish fruit baskets are usually placed against a dark background. Fred Meijer's Expertise. Dimensions 50 x 64 cm, Oil on canvas

Bibliografia di riferimento: E. Provenance: In the same aristocratic family collection in Bern for approximately 200 years. BOUCLE, PIETER VAN (Antwerpen 1610 - 1673 Paris) Stilleben mit Karpfen, Weinflasche, Taback, Zwiebel und Messer auf einer Tischplatte. Öl auf Leinwand. 46 x 55,8 cm. Stilleben in Europa, Ausstellungkat.

        Est: £40,000 - £60,000

PROPERTY FROM A DECEASED'S ESTATE A STILL LIFE WITH APRICOTS, PLUMS, FIGS, PEACHES AND GRAPES IN A BASKET ON A STONE LEDGE, TOGETHER WITH PEARS, SQUASH AND ASPARAGUS measurements note 67.4 by 86.3 cm.; 26 1/2 by 34 in. oil on canvas PROVENANCE Private Collection; Alois Miedl, Amsterdam, trading as J. Goudstikker, acquired from the above; Heinrich Hofmann, Munich, acquired from the above; Linz Museum; Stichting Nederlandsch Kunstbezit; Returned to the heirs of the pre-war owners, 2005. NOTE Flemish by birth, Pieter van Boucle spent most of his working life in France where he worked with fellow still-life painter Lubin Baugin and also in the studio of Simon Vouet. His work combines the still life traditions of his native Flanders, in particular the work of Snyders, with those of his contemporaries in Paris, such as Louis Moillon; compare, for example, the arrangement and treatment of fruit with Snyders' work formerly with a German art dealer (H. Robels, Frans Snyders, p. 228, cat. no. 69, reproduced).

CIRCA 1610 - 1673 PARIS STILL LIFE OF PEACHES, PLUMS, GRAPES AND PEARS IN A BASKET, TOGETHER WITH A PARROT AND A SQUIRREL, ALL RESTING ON A LEDGE DRAPED WITH A CARPET measurements note 71.5 by 81.5 cm.; 28 1/8 by 32 1/8 in. oil on canvas PROVENANCE On the art market in Paris, 1997. NOTE Having trained with Frans Snyders in Antwerp, Pieter van Boucle settled in Paris where he established his reputation as a gifted still-life painter. In this painting he combines a still life of fruit in a basket, which draws inspiration from his northern counterparts Snyders and Adrian van Utrecht, whilst the carpet is a motif more typical of his French contemporary Jacques Hupin. The attribution has been endorsed by M. Fabrice Faré.
