The delivery man, given the name Nectar, became one of the most popular and instantly recognizable images on the walls of France, and was used in dozens of variations. The image was the inspiration for later posters by Iribe, Loupot, and Cassandre, among others. This design, however, is based on the original image of Dransy’s, which the Poyet Frères agency supplied with the name in blue on top and a different color (yellow) for the left side bottles; hence the subscript “d’après Dransy.” (Art Deco; Alcohol)

This second image of Nectar making his rounds not only places him in profile as he takes in the viewer-it has him catching sight of the bench that must look pretty inviting to someone who's been on their feet all day (see following lot). "Today, it's impossible to know if Etienne Nicolas called Dransy or if [Dransy] came to him with the idea. Being an unknown, the second assumption appears more logical . . . On the other hand, we know with certainty than Nectar was born in 1922 and legend has it that a delivery man, named Paven, probably furiously concerned with wine, served as his model" (Nectar/Nicolas, unnumbered [p. 7]). Apparently, the only poster for Nicolas that bears the artist's name upon it is the original Nectar design (see previous lot), with all of the many others to follow having been done by other artists that drew inspiration from Dansy's original; hence the subscript "d'apres Dransy" that appears here. Naja. 1932.Although Dransy's fame rests mainly on the shoulders of his immortal wine-delivering Nectar (see Nos. 311 & 312), he is also responsible for creating a reasonable number of enduring advertising icons, such as this promotion for the venomously-attractive brand of Naja cigarettes. The artist lets you know right up front that both serpents and smokes are more likely than not going to come back and bite you, but his central inclusion of a Middle Eastern charmer makes the unhealthy proposition an attractive one nonetheless. Incidentally, Naja is a genus of poisonous snakes most commonly referred to as cobras, though there are several other genera which also make use of that common name. Nicolas/Nectar et Glou-Glou. 1930.After toting around Nicolas wines for eight years on his own, the company must've decided that Nectar could use a little help. So in order to lighten his load, Dransy came up with "Glou-Glou" (which more or less translates as "Glug-Glug"), an apprentice delivery boy who bore the same surprised, eye-popping expression as his mentor. This pairing appeared a minimum of five times in different Nicolas campaigns over the years and in this "d'apres Dransy" rendition, they are shown taking a breather during the midst of their busy rounds. Nicolas/Fines Bouteilles. 1930.Nicolas was-and is-one of the major wine dealers/distributors in France, and in 1922, the head of the family firm, Etienne Nicolas, asked Dransy to design a poster to show that the company delivers directly to your home. The delivery man, given the name Nectar, became one of the most popular, instantly recognizable images on the walls of France, and was used in dozens of variations. The image was the inspiration for later posters by Iribe, Loupot and Cassandre, among others. This however, is based on the original image of Dransy's, which the Poyet Freres agency supplied with the name in blue on top and a different color (yellow) for the left side bottles; hence the subscript "d'apres Dransy.","1930.
