LANDSCHAFT MIT KRIEGERISCHEM KAMPF GEGEN FRAUEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 57 x 65,5 cm. Ungerahmt. Unter grauem Himmel, vor einem Felsenmassiv mehrere, schwer bewaffnete Soldaten und Männer, gerade im Begriff mehrere Frauen niederzumetzeln. Im Mittelpunkt ein muskulöser Mann mit freiem Oberkörper in Rückenansicht, mit gezücktem Schwert in seiner rechten Hand, eine Frau in dunklem Gewand mit nach oben ausgestrecktem Arm festhaltend. Rechts am Boden bereits liegend eine Frau in leuchtend gold-gelbem Gewand mit nacktem Oberkörper, ebenso rechts daneben eine weitere Frau mit rot leuchtendem Untergewand. Linksseitig ein Mann mit Helm und gezücktem Schwert, eine bereits zu Boden gegangene Frau attackierend. Drastische Darstellung in überwiegend grau-brauner Farbigkeit, wobei einzelne Figuren durch rote und gelb-goldene Kleidungsstücke sowie die Rückenpartie des in der Mitte stehenden Mannes, die durch Lichteinfall besonders hervorgehoben wird, akzentuiert werden. Augsburg, der eine Ähnlichkeit zwischen diesem Kopf und der Radierung Schönfelds "Büste eines bärtigen Greises" feststellte (vgl. Katalog: Johann Heinrich Schönfeld. Bilder, Zeichnungen, Graphik. In bergiger Landschaft, unter hohem blau-grauem Himmel an einem hohen Sockel mit Sarkophag und Figurenfries sitzend ein Flöte spielender Pan mit Efeukranz um seinem Haupt. Zwei weitere Musikinstrumente vor ihm auf dem Boden liegend. Rechts, halb liegend mit freiem Oberkörper und rotem Untergewand eine junge Frau, in ihren Händen ein Tamburin haltend. Johann Heinrich Schönfeld worked in Italy from 1633 to 1649 and settled in Augsburg in 1652. A nymph and a satyr have settled down to play music at a monumental tomb with a frieze of figures. The nymph is lying on the ground and beating a tambourine, the satyr is sitting on the tomb's plinth and is blowing a flute. A panpipe (syrinx) and a shawm lie on the floor. Behind the musicians comes a woman with a basket of fruit on her head. In the front left is an elegant, precious vase made of metals of different colors.

DER PYRRHUSSIEG BEI DER SCHLACHT BEI ASCULUM (UM 1638) Öl auf Leinwand. 166 x 245 cm. Das Gemälde, bis ins Detail von höchster Malqualität und jener Pinselführung, die identisch erscheint mit dem gleichthematischen Werk Schönfelds, das sich in der Alten Pinakothek München befindet (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Lw. 169 x 233 cm., um 1640, dort „Schlachtenszene“ bzw. unzutreffende Bezeichnung „Sieg über Pyrrhus“). Die Darstellung des großformatigen Gemäldes wiederholt bis ins Detail jenes Gemälde, auch in der Malweise des Meisters. Da derart großformatige und detailreiche Werke erfahrungsgemäß als Zusammenarbeit des Meisters mit seinen Gehilfen gesehen werden, ist hier durchaus an eine Meister-Wiederholung mit Werkstattbeteiligung zu denken. Auch das große Format – nahezu identisch mit dem Münchener Bild – und die damaligen Auftragsinteressen dürften diese Ansicht bestätigen. Die Szene schildert die Schlacht bei Asculum in Süditalien 279 v. Chr. Sieger war der Molosser-König Pyrrhos I (lat. Pyrrhus) gegen die Römer. Die Verluste auf beiden Seiten waren bekanntlich derart groß, daß der Sieger nicht mehr auf seinen Erfolg aufbauen konnte und gesagt haben soll: „noch so ein Sieg und wir sind gänzlich untergegangen.“ Damit ist der Begriff „Pyrrhus-Sieg“ in die Geschichte eingegangen. Wie häufig in den Werken Schönfelds mit antiken Szenerien sind auch hier Architekturelemente ins Bild gesetzt. Links, als Repoussoir, der Rest eines Tempels mit kannelierten Säulen, die ein Gesims tragen, rechts ein Rundtempel. Durch einen Bergkegel im Hintergrund, leicht nach rechts verschoben, ist ein kompositorisches Gleichgewicht hergestellt. Der gesamte Mittel- und Vordergrund zeigt in dichter Fülle das Kampfgeschehen, mit einem zu Boden gegangenen Pferd, das mit seinen Scheckfarben eine dominante Stellung im Vordergrund einnimmt. Das tumultartige Geschehen wird noch dramatisiert durch schräg aus dem Getümmel heraus leuchtenden Fahnen, zudem in der rechten Bildseite durch zwei Kriegselefanten mit hohen Satteltürmen. Die genaue Betrachtung zeigt, wie jede einzelne der unzähligen Figuren in hoher Meisterschaft ausgeführt ist. Auch dies steht gegen den Verdacht auf eine Kopie von fremder Hand . Der Maler Johann Heinrich Schönfeld, einer der Hauptmeister des deutschen Barock, von Geburt an ohne Sehkraft des linken Auges und mit eingeschränkter Funktion der rechten Hand, konnte daher in der väterlichen Goldschmiedewerkstatt nicht arbeiten, und kam in die Lehre des Memminger Malers Caspar Sichelbein. Reisen führten ihn nach Stuttgart und Basel, bevor er 1633 vor den Gefahren des Dreißigjährigen Krieges nach Italien floh. In den Jahren 1633 bis 1637/38 hielt er sich zu Studienzwecken in Rom auf, weitere elf Jahre in Neapel, um anschließend nach Dresden zu ziehen. Erst 1651 ist er wieder in seiner Heimatstadt Biberach. Ab 1652 wirkte er in der Reichsstadt Augsburg, mit Meister- und Bürgerrecht. In der Folge schuf er zahlreiche Gemälde für süddeutsche Kirchen, wie etwa um 1670 für den Dom in Würzburg (1945 zerstört). Neben religiösen Themen widmete er sich überwiegend dem mythologischen und historischen Sujet, nicht selten in großem Format, mit oft unübersehbar zahlreichen Staffagefiguren, jedoch stets in Verbindung mit römischen bzw. antiken Architektur- oder Ruinenmotiven. Letztlich war Schönfeld auch für die nach seinem Tode 1710 gegründete „Augsburger Reichsstädtische Akademie“ von hoher Bedeutung. ANBETUNG DER KÖNIGE Öl auf Leinwand. Altdoubliert. Mit kleiner Hinterlegung. 83 x 64 cm. Gezeigt wird ein offener Steilweg, der sich über einem antikisierenden Tempel erhebt und somit bereits eine Anspielung auf das Neue Testament sein mag, da dieses auf das Alte Testament folgt. Davor die sitzende Maria mit dem Christuskind, auf der rechten Seite, weiter hinten, Josef und vor ihm noch der Ochse mit davorstehendem Hund. Die drei Heiligen Könige in reichem Ornat vor dem Kinde kniend. Ein rückwärts abschließender Torbogen mit sehr klein darunter dargestellten Figuren, teilweise in römischer Uniform. Besonders die Darstellung dunkler Farben mit verhaltener Beleuchtung, deuten neben der übermächtigen Architektur, auf eine Entstehung im Umfeld Schönfelds hin. Rest. (1210241) (13)

The elongated figures with small heads and the linear drawing technique remind one of the drawings of the German artist Johann Heinrich Schönfeld (1609-1683). Born a goldsmith's son, Schönfeld received his training with family members in Memmingen. He travelled to Stuttgart, Basel and eventually to Rome. From 1631 to 1651 he lived in Italy as member of an artistic group of painters known as the "Schilderbent", which also included Poussin, Both and Poelenburgh. Between 1562 and 1563 he had a workshop in Augsburg, where he became one of the most important painters of the third quarter of the seventeenth century. Due to his long stay in Italy, the artist became known well beyond the German borders. Similar paintings fetch over 38,000 euros on the international auction market This ‘capriccio’ with the depiction of a philosopher is a work by the German painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Schönfeld (1609-1682). The artist visited the present subject several times, as a few drawings testify (see: ‘Reclining River God’ (1629) and ‘Meditating Democritus’ (1655), now in the State Gallery in Stuttgart). The authorship of the present painting was verbally confirmed to the current owner by Dr. Joseph Strasser, Professor at the University in Augsburg. It depicts the philosopher amongst classical ruins. The composition shows the influence of Italian examples, which Schönfeld knew from his stay in the peninsula (1633-1649). Bei dem Gemälde handelt es sich um eine annähernd gleichgroße, zeitgenössische Wiederholung nach der Komposition Schönfelds ehemals im Besitz der Familie Chigi und jetzt in der Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica im Palazzo Corsini in Rom. Herbert Pée datiert dieses Werk in die reife römische Zeit Schönfelds, was die Jahre 1636 und 1637 meint (s. Herbert Pee: Johann Heinrich Schönfeld. Die Gemälde. Berlin 1971, Nr. 24 mit Abb. 27). Die virtuose Behandlung von Licht und Dunkel sowie der unterschiedlichen Stofflichkeiten legt es nahe, dass der Künstler dieses Gemäldes aus dem direkten Umfeld Schönfelds stammte und möglicherweise seiner Werkstatt angehörte.

This assumption is also corroborated by the painting's signature and dating. Unlike the paintings from the artist's Italian period, which are characterised by dark passages, the present example features a luminous sky and bright colours, which are, however, covered by a yellowish varnish. Bright colours (...) are a distinct feature of Schönfeld's late works, executed in the 1670s and '80s. The group around Alexander on the rock at the centre is particularly satisfying. Further typical elements are the armoured soldiers, the trees at the left, and the employment of arc itecture. Other parts, such as the rear view of the figure at the lower left and the altar seen from below, are less convincingly rendered and suggest the participation of a student or assistant. After his victory parade in which he displayed the captured queen, he is said to have been very generous to her by allowing her to live in a villa near Tivoli until her death in 275 (...) From an iconographic and iconological point of view, the painting is highly interesting as well, for it mixes historical loyalty with the fantasy of the artist, real and unreal worlds. Such juxtapositioning is quite typical for Schönfeld, as well as for the baroque period. The VAN HAM painting displays masterful composition and an extremely qualitative elaboration, quite rare for the german period and if it ocurred, mostly with quite a different approach.
