        Est: €4,000 - €6,000

JOHN COMERFORD (c. 1770-1832) Portrait of Dr Francis White (1787-1859) Oil on original unlined canvas, 68.5 x 58 On reverse of frame label of Bregazzi & Sons of 10 Merrion Row, Dublin And also bears an undated label of James Adam and Sons (lot 80) Literature: Walter Strickland, Dictionary of Irish Artists, 2 Vols (Dublin and London, 1913) Vol. 1, p. 201 (for the replica of the portrait in the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin) Eoin O’Brien and Anne Crookshank, A Portrait of Irish Medicine, an Illustrated History of Medicine in Ireland (Dublin, 1984), p. 9, fig 11 This rare portrait shows the leading Irish doctor and medical and social reformer Francis White. White was born in Carrick-on-Suir, son of Francis White of Carrickbeg, County Waterford; Comerford, too had connections with the Tipperary town. Having learnt to paint by copying portraits in Kilkenny Castle and practiced in his native city, he also worked in Carrick-on Suir before moving to Dublin in 1797, initially for a short visit, but with critical acclaim following when he exhibited two miniatures at Allen’s in Dame Street in 1800: ‘our astonishment at his pictures must excuse this note of admiration’. Comerford thereafter enjoyed a successful career initially combining oil portraiture with the production of miniatures, before specialising in the latter. ‘For many years’, writes Walter Strickland, ‘he was at the head of his profession in this particular field of art’. White equally rose swiftly to success in his profession. He was indentured on St Patrick’s Day 1807 at Dr Steevens’ Hospital, also studying at the Royal College of Surgeons, of which he was elected a member in May 1815. Initially specialising in ocular surgery, he established St Mary's Hospital and Dublin Eye and Ear Infirmary at 36 Lower Ormond Quay and was later instrumental in the foundation of the City of Dublin Hospital on Baggot Street. As a progressive surgeon at the Richmond asylum, White pioneered medical rather than punitive treatment for his patients and has been described as ‘a truly caring reformer and administrator ahead of his time’ (Dictionary of Irish Biography). After his appointments as Inspector-General of Prisons, and subsequently as the first Inspector of Lunatic Asylums, he greatly ameliorated the harsh conditions in which the mentally ill were detained. In 1836 White was elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland where a replica of this portrait hangs. Comerford, by contrast was less adept at navigating institutional politics, vehemently opposing the formation of the Royal Hibernian Academy and being side-lined from the artistic mainstream in the last decade of his life. Dr White meanwhile suffered severe injuries in a railway accident at Dunkitt near Waterford in 1857, dying two years later.

JOHN COMERFORD (c.1770-1832) Portrait of a Lady Watercolour on ivory Oval,…

        Est: €1,000 - €1,500

JOHN COMERFORD (c.1770-1832) Portrait of a Lady Watercolour on ivory Oval, 6cm high, 5cm wide Comerford learnt to paint by copying portraits in Kilkenny Castle and practiced in his native city and also in Carrick-on Suir before moving to Dublin in 1797 for a short visit. Critical acclaim followed when he exhibited two miniatures at Allen’s in Dame Street in 1800: ‘our astonishment at his pictures must excuse this note of admiration’. Comerford thereafter enjoyed a successful career, initially combining oil portraiture with miniatures, before specialising in the latter. ‘For many years’, writes Strickland, ‘he was at the head of his profession in his particular field of art’ and this miniature of a young woman in neoclassical dress shows his stylish panache at capturing pose and character.

He was influenced by the writings of Maria Edgeworth (1767-1848). Comerford acquired his early artistic skills by copying paintings in Kilkenny Castle, Carrick-on-Suir and other towns in the south-east. For some years he worked as an oil portrait painter in Kilkenny, Waterford, Carrick-on-Suir and other nearby places. Comerford was soon dividing his time between Dublin and Kilkenny. Comerford's style was influenced by a meeting in 1799 with the English artist George Chinnery (1774-1852), who was working in Dublin from 1795 to 1802. Comerford, who became a close life-long friend of Chinnery, adopted a variation on the English artist`s style of miniature painting, and with his encouragement he abandoned oil portraits to concentrate for the rest of his career on miniatures.

ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN COMERFORD (1770-1832) Miniature of Lt. William Rhodes 19th Light Dragoons, 1810watercolor, 2 7/8 x 2 3/8 in. oval, within original gold case bearing the following engraved description on recto: "Wm. Rhodes / 19th. Light Dragoons/ 1810"'William Rhodes of Kirskill (near Otley, Leeds in Yorkshire) entered the 19th Light Dragoons as a cornet in 1810, serving with it in England and Ireland. On 12 March 1812, he was promoted to lieutenant and a year later, Lieutenant Rhodes embarked for Canada aboard the HMS Majestic, part of a convoy carrying the 19th Regiment of Light Dragoons and other corps as a vital reinforcement to the North American station, being the only regular cavalry stationed in Canada during the War of 1812. The regiment's first three squadrons arrived at Quebec City in May 1813 and were mounted on horses procured in Lower Canada. Two squadrons were sent to Upper Canada where they were involved in the blockade and re-capture of Fort George, and the destruction of Black Rock and Buffalo in New York State. Elements of the two squadrons participated in Colonel Thomas Pearson's delaying action against Brigadier General Winfield Scott's brigade during the American invasion of 1814. They subsequently fought at the Battle of Chippawa in July 1814, the Battle of Lundy's Lane later in the month and the Siege of Fort Erie in August 1814. Another troop pursued American raiders who had struck at Battle of Malcolm's Mills in November 1814.For these actions, the regiment earned the battle honor of "Niagara". The other squadron had been stationed south of Montreal at The Halfway house (Saint Luc area as well as Fort Lennox and The Block houses along the Lacolle border) and participated in the Battle of Plattsburgh in September 1814. In the autumn of 1814, the two squadrons serving on the Niagara rejoined the other squadron. The regiment served south of Montreal until the end of the war. They were sent back to England in August 1816. Rhodes rose to the rank of captain, but later retired on half-pay. He married Ann, the eldest daughter of Christopher Smith of Bramhope Hall, near Leeds. When her father died in 1846, the property passed to them and Rhodes lived here until his death in 1869 at age 77.Provenance: by descent in the Rhodes of Bramhope family until c. 1930, whence sold at auction.

Comerford was also influenced by the American painter Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) who also worked in Dublin from 1787-1793. Comerford was highly regarded during his lifetime and many of his works were engraved.
